The effect of minerals on the body

Calcium

Impact: The main composition of bone and tooth structure, helping blood coagulation and muscle contraction and nerve transmission

Causes of deficiency: old age, menopause, high intake of substances that increase urinary excretion of calcium (protein, sodium, caffeine (drug), antacids, laxatives, steroids (gastric atrophy), vitamin D deficiency

Symptoms of deficiency: Osteoporosis, muscle cramps, nervous irritability, increased post-traumatic bleeding

Dosage: Daily in women and men as a prophylaxis 1000-1200 mg and for treatment 1000-3000 mg

Toxicity: In healthy adults, oral calcium up to 2 grams per day has no side effects. Patients with hypoparathyroidism and those prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones should avoid high calcium intake.

Iron

Effect: Oxygen transport by hemoglobin in red blood cells, storage of oxygen in the form of myoglobin in muscle cells, production of energy in mitochondria, cofactor of liver enzymes such as cytochrome P450, involvement in the production of neurotransmitters and thyroid hormone

Causes of deficiency: Menstruation in women, growth period, infants who are exclusively breastfed (milk iron is very low). Vegetarian diet, drinking colorful coffee and tea with food, gastric atrophy, long-term use of antacids, various hemorrhages, chronic diseases, deficiency of vitamins A, B6 and copper

Symptoms of deficiency: anemia, paleness, dry skin, decreased nail strength, nail spooning, brittle hair, premature fatigue, anorexia, cold intolerance, learning disabilities, inflammation of the oral mucosa, increased vulnerability to infection.

Toxicity: Acute poisoning in young children can be fatal, for example, 2 grams of elemental iron in a 10 kg child is fatal.

magnesium

Impact: Oxidation of fats, sugars and proteins, regulation of calcium-dependent contractions, dilation of cardiac and peripheral arteries, depolarization in neurotransmission, of bone and tooth building components

Causes of deficiency: diet, strenuous exercise, growth period, medication (diuretic, anticancer, steroid, laxative), diabetes, hyperparathyroidism

Symptoms of deficiency: muscle cramps, decreased blood calcium and potassium, mood swings, anorexia, nausea, high triglycerides and cholesterol, sodium and water retention

Toxicity: In adults, amounts higher than 1 gram per day are not toxic. Excretion in people with chronic renal failure

Magnesium is disrupted. In these people, taking magnesium supplements or antacids and laxatives containing magnesium increases the concentration of this metal in the blood.

Leads to nausea, vomiting, hypotension and arrhythmia.

Roy

Impact: cofactor of biochemical reactions, interference in cell growth and regulation of immune response, protection of cells against organic toxins, heavy metals, radiation, toxins of pathogenic bacteria and as an antioxidant

Causes of deficiency: Growth period, vegetarian diet, weight loss diets, high calcium intake, disease (liver, kidney, diabetes)

Symptoms of deficiency: dermatitis, acne, slow wound healing, hair loss, decreased sense of smell, lack of concentration, decreased sperm, irregular ovulation

Toxicity: Less than 100 mg per day is not toxic, more than 150 mg causes nausea and more than 300 mg impairs immune function.
